3 Ways to Decorate with Midcentury Like Hollywood Mogul

Los Angeles Modern Auctions has tons of great mid-century design and art up for sale in early March.

Below is a sampling of what we think will the top lots and some alternatives if you're looking some cool design or art for your home.

  1. With the consternation about President Donald Trump and the growing fondness for the days of the President Barrack Obama administration, we expect the Shepard Fairey "Hope" lithograph to bring the pre-sale estimate of $1,500.
  2. This George Nakashima wall shelf seems like a good deal at $3,000.
  3. This Serge Mouille wall lamp is just beautiful and at $10,000 appears a bit high for a reissue made in 1997. Still a great design.

If you don't have $1,500-$10,000 to spend, we've found some alternatives that can get you the same look at a fraction of the price.

  • How about $4 and change for the Fairey poster? Get yourself a nice frame and you're still into this piece of iconic art for less than $30.

  • The Nakashima wall shelf is a little more difficult to source, but possible. It has Nakashima's classic "live-edge" feature. If you've got access to a drill, some screws and support, make your own live-edge shelf with this beautiful wood. And save yourself about $2,900.

  • Finally, the Mouille lamp. Another terrific mid-century design, this articulated light can make your living space jump with light and life. The version here has several of the Mouille hallmarks at a fraction of the price!
